The smartphone industry has changed a lot in the last few years. At one time, it was about making everything that could easily fit in your pocket; Now the line between the tablet and the phone with each passing day.
Meizu’s latest device, the M3 Max, embodies that trend, featuring a 6.0-inch display. But does its performance under the hood match its massive form? We traced the phone for a spin.

As has been the case with several Meizu phones we’ve reviewed in recent months, the designers of this model were clearly inspired by a certain fruity product, or in this case, the Plus version of one. That this is a cheeky copy of the iPhone isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though – the phone looks great. From its minimalist and symmetrical styling to the extremely slim and pleasant profile, the device really screams quality, at least when it comes to design.
Design and Handling
Of course, with a 6-inch screen and a body measuring 6.42 × 3.21 × 0.31 inches, this phone is an absolute beast, well and truly in phablet territory. In fact, it’s even bigger than the older Nexus 6, the whale of a phone that Google launched with Motorola a few years ago. If you’re looking for a big-screen phone, this device has the goods. We recommend that you try it first, however; some might find it too big.
Although big, the phone doesn’t feel too heavy, quite the contrary. Its 0.31-inch thickness makes it feel good and stylish, especially for someone who is used to phablet-sized phones. If this is your first phablet, it will take a long time to get used to, but this is true for any phablet – not just this one.
One of the nice touches of this phone is its symmetry. The camera (which doesn’t sit under a bump) is centered along the back, and even the front camera, which sits to the right of the top speaker, is offset by an ambient light sensor on the left. Details like this really put the phone above the edge and give it that premium look. It’s one thing to copy Apple, but it’s another thing to copy Apple while adding your own touch to the design, like Meizu did.
The design isn’t the only sign that Meizu was inspired by Apple. Take a look at the phone’s software and the Android 6.0 Marshmallow overlay created by Meizu called Flyme OS, and you’ll see similarities to iOS. For example, there is no app drawer; instead, all your apps are in one of the Home screen panels. Flyme OS also has a number of tool applications, which are pre-installed in a folder called Flyme Tools.
